Dear
friends,
Is it just me or have the three
months since I last wrote just flown by? I guess
that's what happens when you've got too much going
on. Either that, or I've simply wished the time
away in anticipation of warmer weather and the
World Cup.
In fact, it's
already two weeks since The Double Eagle was
published in paperback in the US, complete
with a fantastic new cover to complement its "international
thriller" credentials! Again it's had a great
response from booksellers, so fingers crossed
for a good run. Turkish and Dutch versions are
set to follow soon and I've included pictures
of all these covers below in case you're interested.
Talking of covers, you may also be interested
to see below the proposed cover for the second
Tom Kirk adventure, The Black Sun, which
is due out late this year. This cover was in fact
originally designed for the UK market, but some
of the retailers thought it was a bit dark, so
they changed it for something a bit softer. Thankfully,
you lot over the pond aren't quite so wet (!)
and have gone with the original design, which
I think is a lot stronger, both more mysterious
and more sinister. I've seen the galleys and they
look great and the mock-ups for the dust-jacket,
complete with burnished silver embossing, look
fantastic. By the way, if anyone wants a quick
taster of The Black Sun, the paperback
version of The Double Eagle mentioned above has
the first few chapters re-printed at the back.
It's been a busy time on the
foreign rights front, with The Double Eagle
being sold to Latvia and Romania as well as to
Hungary and Finland in condensed form. Meanwhile
The Black Sun has been sold to Poland and,
best of all, to France (details below). This means
that I finally get to put my French language skills
to some sort of good use other than ordering wine.
My old tutor will be relieved to know that I'm
not doing the translation itself, just reviewing
it. Obviously, none of the mistakes will be mine!
Many of you, my editor included, have asked me
for a bit more detail on Book 3 - tentatively
titled The Napoleon Seal. Well, I don't
want to give too much away (especially as you
haven't even seen Book 2 yet!), but I can tell
you that Jennifer Browne makes a welcome re-appearance
and that Tom finds himself confronting a former
competitor of his, the French master-thief Milo.
The action starts with the crucifixion of an art-forger
during Holy Week in Seville before moving, via
the theft of a priceless Leonardo from a castle
in Scotland, through London, Paris, New York and
Havana. At the heart of the story is a 200 year
old conspiracy to mask the theft of one of the
world's most famous paintings...
Finally and most importantly, the scans suggest
that Victoria and I are having another little
girl to be a sister to Amelia. Everyone tells
me the second one is easier but so far it's only
got harder - I've been kicked out of my office
at home in anticipation of the new arrival! Great.
Due date is mid
September. No name yet but suggestions
gratefully received - and yes, Jennifer has already
been vetoed!
Best wishes and happy reading
