Newsletter - Spring 2006

Dear friends,

First of all a confession. I've never written one of these before, so bear with me since I'm making this up as I go along. Luckily the basic concept of a newsletter, from what people have told me, is pretty simple. The clue's sort of in the name!

Don't worry, this will only be a periodic affair - I don't intend to spam you! But now seems like the right time to put finger to keyboard for the first time, since the last few months have been pretty busy and the next few promise to be even more so:

First,
I wanted to let you know that The Double Eagle has had a fantastic run in the UK since it's been released in paperback, selling over 100,000 copies and still rising. Apparently that officially makes it a bestseller! The US paperback is released in June, so let's hope for a similar run there.

Second, Harper Collins UK have offered me another contract, which means Tom Kirk gets to soldier on for at least another two books. You'll be pleased to know I'm already hard at work on Book 3 which is provisionally named The Napoleon Seal, although I expect my publishers will change it. They usually do...

I've just got back from the "Left Coast Crime" conference in Bristol which I know many of you flew over for. It was my first ever conference and I have to say I had a great time, including meeting Lee Child and Jeffrey Deaver!
In case you're interested, I've provided a bit more detail on all these stories below.

Finally, a quick word to thank everyone who has written to me over the last few months to share their enjoyment of The Double Eagle and Tom and Jennifer's adventure. One of the most rewarding things about being a writer is hearing from your readers, so thank you all for your kind words and support and encouragement. It's really appreciated.

Best wishes and happy reading

P.S. Also just wanted to share the happy news that I've just found out I'm going to be a father again! More sleepless nights ...

US Book Tour remembered (September 2005)

It seems like quite a long time ago, but a lot of you have asked about how the book tour went in the US last year.

Well, the answer is really well. I had a fantastic time promoting The Double Eagle in NYC, Washington DC, San Francisco and Kentucky and met some great people along the way,
including this happy customer in M is for Mystery in San Mateo.

Special thanks go to the booksellers who welcomed me so warmly and did a fantastic job in promoting The Double Eagle to their customers:
- Carrie Smith at Borders (Bailey's Crossroads), VA
- Maggie Topkis at Partners in Crime in New York, NY
- Ed Kaufman at M is for Mystery in San Mateo, CA
- Carol Besse at Carmichael's in Louisville, KY
- Susanne Marques at Joseph Beth in Lexington, KY

A big thank you also to Barb Ellis, Carol Fauth and Linda Long for looking after me so well during my stay.

The Double Eagle becomes a bestseller in the UK
The image on the left shows the planned cover for the US paperback edition which should be with you in June 2006. Don't know what you think, but I really like it. It has a brooding intensity and energy that I think suits the book well.

Meanwhile back in the UK, The Double Eagle is now officially a bestseller, having sold over 100,000 copies and still rising.

Over the last few months it has featured in the top ten of all the major retailers including WH Smith (6), Tesco (8), Asda (6), Woolworths (3) and even got to No. 1 in Moto Service Stations. Don't laugh - it all counts!

The exciting news is that in the midst of all this, Harper Collins UK have offered me another contract which means that Tom gets to fight on in at least another two adventures, which is fantastic. I'm already hard at work on Book 3, which sees Jennifer back in the picture and Tom locking horns with a new adversary.
Left Coast Crime (17-20 March)

And finally ... rights news

I lost my crime conference virginity a few weeks ago (!) by featuring on two panels at this year's Left Coast Crime in Bristol.

One was for the main festival and featured eight new crime writers talking about their books and how they got into writing and the other was for the International Thriller Writers on how thiller writers use history to inspire or inform their work.

In the last few months Spanish language rights to both TDE and TBS have been sold to Plaza y Janes and large print and audio rights to WF Howes.

Readers Digest have also bought condensation rights for TBS in the UK and the Asia Pacific region.

Still no movie deal though!!
